Abstract
Purpose: Health professions education (HPE) continually evolves, driven by medical educators who hold dual roles as clinicians and educators. Medical Educator Portfolios (MEPs) provide a structured approach to documenting contributions within this context. The increasing complexity and diversity of personal and professional experiences highlight the need for a more comprehensive descriptor of accomplishments. Therefore, this review aims to outline core components of MEPs and comprehensively describe their sequential design, while highlighting their significance within HPE
Methods: This comprehensive narrative review was conducted through a systematic literature search across multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, focusing on articles related to MEPs’ significance in HPE. Inclusion emphasized studies that discuss components, construction, implementation, and evaluation of MEPs in HPE. Findings were demonstrated as narrative synthesis to provide insights on effective utilization of MEPs to enhance the professional development of medical educators. Furthermore, essential components and a stepwise approach were organized and outlined sequentially. Reporting was structured and appraised following the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) guidelines.
Results: Unlike traditional Curriculum Vitae (CVs), MEPs provide a structured and thorough representation of significant milestones, competencies, and micro-credentials, encompassing professional identity, teaching, mentorship, research, leadership, assessment, and curriculum-related activities. Furthermore, utilization of MEPs as credible instruments for evaluation and promotion is widely accepted among medical schools, colleges, and governing bodies. Developing MEPs entails continuous engagement through preparatory, implementation, evaluation, and reflective phases that align closely with the educator’s individual context.
Conclusions: MEPs are integral to medical educators’ professional development and requires active engagement through preparation, implementation, reflection, and improvement phases. Contextual considerations are essential when utilizing MEPs, as their effectiveness within HPE is influenced by environmental, personal, and professional factors.
