Abstract

Purpose: Hospital managers are required to have knowledge and skills that enables them to effectively plan, manage, coordinate and monitor health care activities and services provided in complex organizations and contexts. This scoping review explores aspects and concepts regarding hospital managers education, training and competence development, including the description of common areas or topics included in hospital managers education curriculum and training programs in European countries in terms of qualification, identifies core competencies and discusses trends in the organization and functioning of healthcare institutions and systems, and their impact on education, training and practice in health management.

Methods: Scoping review of literature describing hospital managers education and training curriculum and competence development or related concepts in European countries. PRISMA-ScR checklist recommendations were followed to ensure methodological quality and rigor.

Results: From 3.366 unique articles ten included after screening and review. Studies were categorized in three groups, notwithstanding the fact that some studies have been assigned to more than one category, according to the aims of this scoping review: education, professional training and competence development. After full-text review, studies were categorized according to the topics covered. Two or more topics could be attributed to the same article. The following frequency of topics were found: three studies in competence development, two studies in leadership, one study in digital health, three on program implementation, one in eLearning strategies, two in curriculum and program development and one in accreditation strategies. A narrative description of the studies was provided.

Conclusion: This review establishes a foundation for future studies aimed at benchmarking and enhancing education and professional development programs for hospital managers in Europe. By promoting the professionalization of healthcare management, these efforts enhance efficiency and helps to ensure the best use of limited resources and ultimately promote better performance of healthcare systems around Europe and more adequate responses to local, national and international challenges.
