Abstract
Introduction: This article introduces a fresh perspective on the digital and communication challenges faced by international PhD applicants. This article focuses on issues such as digital literacy, email etiquette, and communication barriers, offering practical strategies to help applicants effectively navigate online applications and remote interactions with supervisors and Graduate Research Schools. This article provides insights for international doctoral applicants in navigating the complex process of approaching potential supervisors and applying to PhD programs at top-ranking international universities.
Methods: The availability of limited number of positions, supervisors and funding opportunities compared to the number of applicants makes the competition fierce. The insights provided highlight the importance of creating a distinctive digital research profile, aligning research interests with potential supervisors, and effectively leveraging university ranking and online resources while also highlighting that a well-crafted CV is essential for capturing the attention of stakeholders. The challenges of digital poverty among applicants and the potential solutions are mentioned.
Results: Applicants should also be aware of the potential nuances of email communication and thoroughly prepare for the pre-doctoral admission interviews. This article also addresses potential challenges, such as anxiety during pre-doctoral admission interviews and suggests strategies such as meditation, yoga, and engaging in social activities during weekends that may help in reducing anxiety. Employing these anxiety management strategies could be useful to showcase the true potential of the applicant, thus assisting the applicant to make a strong case for a funded PhD position. The article also acknowledges the need for original research around this topic to provide evidence-based solutions to the challenges faced by international doctoral applicants.
Conclusion: By addressing these challenges and strategies, this article offers tips to potential applicants into optimising the application process and enhancing communication with stakeholders.
